Question: What Is Your Favorite Console?
Answer: The year was 1999, Y2K was just a couple months away, and the Sega Dreamcast launched the day before my birthday. I rode my bike at least 10 miles to the game store I would end up owning later in life and was able to grab a Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure, TrickStyle and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing.
Sonic’s 1st 3D adventure threw me off when it felt so odd with its voice acting and dubbed lip syncing. But it was a ton of fun seeing that I could play through the story with multiple different characters and also introduced us to Big The Cat! Ready 2 Rumble Boxing was a delight seeing the power of the Dreamcast’s technology allow for simulated facial animations in game and Michael Buffer’s voice yelling “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!” as I beat the ever loving stuffing out of Big Willy Johnson as Afro Thunder (who sounded like Chris Rock).
The fact that the Dreamcast also had an integrated 56k modem to allow for online play and even a web browser (man, dial up was insane back in the day, but it’s all we had). I remember trying to find cheat codes online with my Dreamcast browser, write them down and then play games all on the same device. Also allowing for downloadable content, or DLC with the super fun VMU memory card… The Dreamcast is easily my favorite console of all time.
