Q: What Was Your Favorite Game Trailer?

A: Game trailers, like all trailers, are an art form in themselves. A good trailer will entice you and keep you actively wanting to play whatever game is being shown. A lot of people would most likely say their favorite trailer is the Metal Gear Solid 2 trailer. It’s widely regarded as the best game trailer, people legitimately cried when they saw it on the E3 show floor back in 2000. However my favorite game trailer is and always has been the Dead Island reveal.

What a crazy trailer this was even back in the day. It starts off with a zoomed in close up of an eye, pulling out and showing a little girl dead on the ground as a lot of people are being attacked by zombies. As the girl starts getting up and floating away in the air, you realize the video is playing in reverse, and while the girl is reversing up the side of the building, it’s interspersed with clips of things that are happening right before this horrific event. It’s a great showcase of some truly spectacular storytelling in an out of order way.

The Dead Island game itself ended up being a very divisive game, where some loved it and some hated it. I was kinda in the middle. I enjoyed the first few hours of the game, but ended up putting it down maybe around 5-6 hours in, being tired of the tank like enemies and the really difficult to navigate map. However the trailer itself was the crowning achievement and lives on as one of the best game trailers ever made, and my personal favorite.
