Q: What Game Do You Wish Had A Sequel?
A: Originally, this question in my mind was always answered by having a sequel to my favorite game, Psychonauts, but Double Fine ended up making good on following up Psychonauts with not one, but two sequels, and having that first followup be a 1.5 game in VR. So now I have to think of a new answer.
Which comes in the form of another Tim Schafer game, Full Throttle. This PC only game (at the time) featured a biker named Ben who was the leader of The Polecats, a biker game set in a futuristic time period where cars hover, but motorcycles are still on two wheels. Ben gets caught up in a bigger conspiracy, but that’s not really what I want to talk about. The game itself was a huge game for me when I was younger, as it was one of those more cinematic games that really pushed the power of our family PC.
The graphics are nothing but beautiful with some gorgeously animated cutscenes and phenomenal voice acting (Mark Hamill as Ripburger) all culminate into a spectacular point and click game with puzzles and action in the SCUMM engine.
They actually were developing a sequel in 2003, and I remember seeing screenshots and even hearing of a E3 demo that was playable. It was going to be a 3D Action Adventure game. Sadly, many different events happened to thwart the game ever seeing release. Tim Schafer left LucartArts after they shifted to a more action based vision, Tim also formed Double Fine and made Psychonauts instead. The voice actor for the main character Ben passed away, and internal struggles with the game left it in a very rough state when presented to the public, and the public made fun of it… all this led to its cancellation.
I would love a sequel someday, but while Tim Schafer and Double Fine own the rights to the game again, he’s stated that while the ending was a cliffhanger, he doesn't intend to ever go back, as the story was wrapped up and intentionally left open ended to parallel Ben’s free spirit lifestyle of a biker.
Never say never, as there is always a chance, or a spark of hope, but I personally don’t see Tim going back at this point. He’s getting older, and it seems like a much bigger task to go back to this game at this point and try to make something that could please most fans. Same goes with a Brutal Legend 2, I’m sure Jack Black wouldn’t mind returning to the role of Eddie the Roadie.
